VS Code detached the agent session from the window. Purview started drafting retention rules for Copilot memory. Persistence is the boring half of a platform, and it is the half you cannot retrofit.

Microsoft shipped change tracking with before-and-after diffs, workflow checkpoints you can resume from, a session you can explicitly release, a chat client that fails over to a second model, and two model retirements that landed while most of us were not looking. I have been reading release notes for three years and this is the first week where the through-line was not a new capability. It was recovery.

Microsoft shipped a proper CLI for M365 Copilot extensibility, gave Dataverse agents their own Entra identity, wrote the production guide for the GitHub Copilot harness, and pushed a Power Automate plugin that reads a natural-language flow spec from the coding agent of your choice. The individual features look modest. Together they say something specific. The developer path is now the artifact, not what runs on top of it. One correction in here too, on something edition 013 and I both got slightly ahead of.

Edition 012 was about model choice becoming a dropdown. This week the earnings call turned the seat count into infrastructure. Microsoft 365 Copilot passed 30 million paid seats. Azure crossed 100 billion in annual revenue. Both numbers will be quoted at you all week. Neither is the news. The shipping that mattered happened one layer below. Cowork gained event-driven tasks that autostart on an inbound email or a Teams mention. Prompt Columns went GA in Dataverse, so AI outputs live inside rows at write time. Agent Framework 1.16 and the MCP C# SDK 2.0 shipped the plumbing: bounded MCP skill discovery on a fresh stateless protocol. Model choice is settled. What activates below the seat is the new question.

Edition 011 was about the socket, Microsoft standardizing what agents plug into rather than fighting to own the surface. This week the vendors walked straight through it. Anthropic shipped Claude Opus 5 into Microsoft Foundry, Microsoft 365 Copilot and GitHub Copilot on the same day, with no preview gate and no staged rollout. On that same day OpenAI-operated models flipped to on by default for commercial tenants, quietly ending the subprocessor approval loop many of us have been running through client legal teams since 2025. Agent Framework moved multi-agent orchestration out of application code and into portable YAML at 1.0. Foundry hosted agents grew a visual canvas. And Defender started scoring AI agents by risk rather than just inventorying them. The model is now a dropdown your users can already see, the runtime is portable, and the only layer left that nobody can swap out is governance.

Edition 010 was about where the agent runs. This week the question moved to what it plugs into. VS Code 1.129 moved agent execution out of the editor process and into a dedicated Agent Host, reached through the Agent Host Protocol, an open MIT-licensed spec with SDKs in five languages that runs Copilot, Claude, and Codex as equals. On the same days, MCP-built agents appeared in the web versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, federated Copilot connectors arrived that query external systems with the user's own credentials and no org-wide index, Agent Skills reached a stable API in Python, and the Microsoft 365 admin center became the place where prompts, agents, and agent security are governed. The pattern underneath all of it: Microsoft is standardizing the socket rather than trying to own the surface.

Build 2026 promised hosted agents in Foundry Agent Service by early July, and last week's edition flagged it as the thing to watch. It landed: hosted agents went generally available as a managed production runtime for agents that run for hours or days, with SLAs and 24/7 support, alongside GPT-5.6 GA and the Asia-Pacific Data Zone. Around it, the rest of the stack matured in the same days. Dataverse became the agent data platform inside every coding agent, Agent Framework's orchestration patterns reached 1.0 across Python and .NET, Agent Skills arrived for .NET, and enterprise governance followed the agents out to the telemetry stream.
